2019 MLB Offseason Breakdown: Philadelphia Phillies

Here is my MLB 2019 Offseason Breakdown Blog. This time it is on the Philadelphia Phillies and I will talk about who the Phillies acquired and lost, their starting lineup and pitching rotation and my prediction for them this season. Let’s get into the blog.

Offseason Acquisitions and Loses:
Bryce Harper signs a 13 year $330 million contract

The Phillies won the offseason and this was what set it. You can say what you want about Harper, but when it comes down to it Bryce Harper is one of the best players in the MLB. He’s a player that will put your team in contention and right now the Phillies are a scary team to face.
Phillies trade 3 minor league prospects for J.T. Realmuto
Before the Phillies got Harper they were making any moves that would convince Harper into joining the team and getting a top 5 catcher in the MLB will do that. Over the past three seasons, J.T. has been hitting .286 and averaged 16 home runs and 62 RBI’s a season. Realmuto has only been getting better and it has shown with him making his first career All-Star game and winning his first Silver Slugger.
Andrew McCutchen signs a 3 year $50 million contract
This was not a signing I saw coming, but I think it is a very good one. For some reason ever since he won his MVP I always thought he was going to have a good season no matter how he played previously. Also, McCutchen adds good defense to the outfield as he won a Gold Glove back in 2012.
Phillies trade Carlos Santana and J.P. Crawford for Jean Segura, Juan Nicasio, and James Pazos
This trade was mainly done to get rid of Santana’s salary as they clearly do not need him anymore. Not to mention Jean Segura is a good player to get as he hit .304 last season 63 RBI’s and 91 runs.
David Robertson signs a 2 year $23 million contract
The Phillies round it out by boosting their bullpen. Robinson will probably make the switch back to closer after spending a year and a half as a setup guy for the Yankees. Robinson has 137 career saves so far.

Starting Lineup:
C: J.T. Realmuto
1B: Rhys Hoskins
2B: Cesar Hernandez
3B: Mikel Franco
SS: Jean Segura
LF: Andrew McCutchen
CF: Odubel Herrera
RF: Bryce Harper

Starting Rotation:
1. Aaron Nola
2. Jake Arrieta
3. Nick Pivetta
4. Zach Eflin
5. Vince Velasquez

Offseason Grade: A+

Like I said before, the Phillies had the best offseason in the MLB by getting Harper, McCutchen, Realmuto, and others, and I think it is going to work out for them. The Phillies are going to dominate the NL East and might get 100 wins or come close. Then I see them winning the National League pennant and making it to the World Series. The only problem for the Phillies is, they won’t win it. I have the Red Sox winning back-to-back and the Phillies are in their way. It should be a fun World Series, it’s just the Red Sox starting pitching is better right now.
